Who runs the site
GrassKnuckles is the Steam nickname of Dota Ledger's owner and editor. He has played Dota 2 for seven years, follows esports and likes taking apart matches, patches and the meta. He's also into Dota cosmetics.
He decides what the site covers: which questions the guides answer and which tools players need to make a trading decision.
How guides are written
Guides appear under the Dota Ledger Editorial Desk byline, which the site uses for all its guides and methodology pages. Each guide answers one practical question, such as how to sell an item on the Steam Market or whether opening treasures is worth it, and builds the answer on our item data and the sources linked in the text.
We use AI-assisted tools to help draft, translate and format guides. That makes the work faster, but mistakes can slip through. So guides name their sources and date their prices, and you can report anything that looks wrong.
Worked examples with hypothetical numbers are labelled as examples, so you can tell them apart from real prices. All 53 guides exist in English and Russian. The two versions can be updated on different days, and a guide's Updated date refers to its text, not to a fresh price check.
How prices work
Item data and Steam prices come from a third-party Steam market data provider. Marketplace prices come from the marketplaces' own public price feeds. Both refresh once a day, and every item page shows when its prices were last updated.
- Steam price — the item's price on the Steam Community Market at our last update.
- Marketplace prices — listed prices on other trading sites, where we have data. Fees, currencies and payout rules differ by site, so your final amount can differ too.
- 30-day volume — the activity figure our data provider reports for the past 30 days. Use it as a rough signal of demand.
- Price history — at most one data point per day, with fewer points for older periods. It shows the trend, not every individual trade.
- Missing prices — when we have no price for an item, we show it as missing, never as $0.
The economy index follows a fixed basket of items to show which way the market is moving; it isn't the total value of every Dota 2 item. Portfolio totals include only items that have a price.
Prices can change between updates. Before you buy or sell, check the exact item, the fees and the final payout on the marketplace itself.

Where the data comes from
- Item list and Steam prices — a third-party Steam market data provider, updated daily.
- Marketplace prices — public price feeds from Market Dota 2, Waxpeer, Skinport and CS.TRADE, updated daily.
- Sets, treasures and item relationships — Dota 2 game files, mirrored by the public dotabuff/d2vpkr project.
- Hero data and match statistics — OpenDota (the dotaconstants dataset and public match data).
- Draft matchups, synergies and hero positions by rank — STRATZ, refreshed weekly for the current patch; OpenDota is the fallback.
- Marketplace fees and payouts — mainly each site's official pages; every review lists its sources and the date we checked them.
- Patches, releases and trading rules — official Dota 2 announcements and Steam Support.
Dota Ledger doesn't use a Valve or Steam API key. It is an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Valve; Dota 2 and related assets are trademarks of Valve Corporation. Source links are there so you can check a claim yourself; a link is not an endorsement.
Report a mistake
Spotted a wrong price, an outdated fee or a broken link? Send the page address, the item name, what's wrong and a source if you have one. If we can't confirm a reported fact, we'd rather remove the claim than guess.
