Some Dota 2 catalog items include gem sockets. Gems can recolor, animate, sign, or track, and a socketed gem helps identify the exact variant. When two listings differ, compare the base item, gem fields, quality, and current venue terms rather than attributing the difference to one label.
Compare the exact gemmed variant
When saved values differ, check the gem and item fields, then verify comparable listings at the venue.
The main gem types
- Prismatic gems recolor an item. Color names identify variants but do not establish scarcity, demand, or a price premium.
- Ethereal gems add a particle effect such as flame, frost, or energy. On couriers, the effect is part of the exact variant that must be compared.
- Kinetic gems add new animations — a custom idle, taunt or movement. They change how a item moves rather than how it looks at rest.
- Autograph gems identify a professional player's signature on the item and may create an Autographed-quality variant. The label does not prove a price premium.
The tracking and social gems
- Inscribed (tracking) gems record named in-game statistics. Distribution and price effects depend on the exact item and are not established by the label.
- Prophecy gems record a named prediction. Treat any price effect as unknown until the exact variant is compared.
- Spectator / social gems tie into community and viewing features rather than appearance.
How gems change value
A gem label does not establish supply, demand, or value. Use it to identify the exact catalog variant, compare its dated provider observation with the base item, and verify the current listing independently.
Two practical notes when buying gemmed items:
- Some gems are removable or re-socketable and some are not. Read the item carefully — a permanently fused gem is part of the item's identity and price.
- Compare base and gemmed rows separately. Use the price table as dated context, then inspect like-for-like venue listings.
