Dota 2 Gems Explained: Effects, Colours and Safe Socketing
Every Dota 2 gem type, what it does, how sockets work and what can be destroyed.

Gems in Dota 2 are cosmetic add-ons that go into sockets on items. They change how an item looks, animates or tracks stats and have no effect on gameplay. The main types are Prismatic (effect colour), Ethereal (unusual courier effect), Inscribed (stat counter), Kinetic (animation), Spectator (games watched) and Autograph Runes (player signatures).

Gem and rune prices are on the gem and rune list. Search the exact name, because gems of one type differ a lot from each other. A Prismatic gem such as Prismatic: Placid Blue is a Mythical-rarity item that trades on the Steam Market.
Which gem do you need?
- A different effect colour: Prismatic, on a courier that already has an Ethereal gem.
- A different courier effect: Ethereal.
- A new hero animation: Kinetic.
- A kill, win or other counter on your item: Inscribed.
- A player’s signature: an Autograph Rune. One item can hold several, so a full team can sign it. See the autographs guide.
- A tournament counter: a Spectator gem for that league, team or player. Styles that once needed “games viewed” now need a Spectator gem with the right count.
What is an Inscribed gem?
An Inscribed gem counts something the item does, such as kills or wins. It works like the old Strange system, which Valve renamed Inscribed in the Three Spirits update. Once an Inscribed gem is in an item, the item has Inscribed quality. Different items count different stats, so read the gem’s description before you buy. Ethereal and Prismatic gems on unusual couriers
An unusual courier has two rare sockets: one for an Ethereal gem and one for a Prismatic gem. Ethereal sets the effect, such as fire or snow. Prismatic sets its colour. Together they make the courier look the way it does, and a new Prismatic gem changes only the colour. Rare sockets cannot be created, so the layout of an unusual courier is fixed. Legacy colours are named “Legacy” followed by RGB numbers. Valve kept the colours of old courier paint as colour gems when it replaced the paint system.
How sockets work
Sockets and gems arrived with the Three Spirits update on 14 November 2013. At launch an item could have up to five sockets, each holding one gem, and some sockets accept only certain gem types. There are two kinds: standard sockets, which take most gems, and rare sockets, which take Ethereal and Prismatic gems. The Artificer’s Chisel adds a socket to an item, but only a standard one.
Adding gems can change an item’s quality. Unusual items keep their quality. On other items the quality follows the order in which you add gems, so an Inscribed item that receives an Autograph Rune becomes Autographed.
How to add and remove a gem
- Open the item’s socket window in the Armory (right-click the item).
- Check the socket type. A standard socket cannot take an Ethereal or Prismatic gem.
- Put the gem into an empty socket and read the confirmation before you accept.
- To remove a normal gem, use an Artificer’s Hammer on the item.
- To remove an Ethereal or Prismatic gem, use a Master Artificer’s Hammer. Read the warning below first.
Where gems come from
When the gem system launched on 14 November 2013, Gem Packs replaced Strange modifiers and unusual paint, and every unusual courier received its matching Prismatic gem. The Dota 2 wiki lists Locked Gemstone Caches, bundles that ship with gems and extraction with a hammer as sources. Liquipedia lists Prismatic gems as tradable and marketable, so you can also buy one on the Steam Market.
One rule matters when you unpack a bundle. A gem installed on a bundle moves to a randomly selected wearable inside it, and a Spectator gem moves to all of them. Check where the gem sits before you open anything.
Special-event gems
Some gems were made for a single event or tournament. The Dota 2 wiki lists a Corrupted gem from Frostivus 2013 that counts Demons Imprisoned, a DreamLeague Season 1 gem that came with the ticket, a gem for The International that grows with your Compendium level, and an Assured Victory Shout gem that counts correct predictions made one after another. None of them work like a normal Inscribed gem, so read each description.
Before you buy a gem
- Name the item that will hold it and check that it has an empty socket of the right type.
- Read the gem description and compare it with what you want to track or change.
- If the item already has a gem you want to keep, do not use that socket: a new gem destroys the old one.
- Remember that quality can change. Unusual items keep their quality when you add gems, but other items can change quality.
- Do not pay a premium for the word “Inscribed” alone. A counter is worth what a buyer cares to track.
What can go wrong
- Replacing destroys. Valve’s rule: when you add a gem to an occupied socket, the old gem is destroyed.
- Extracting an Ethereal or Prismatic gem destroys the courier. The Dota 2 wiki and Liquipedia both say the Master Artificer’s Hammer destroys the original item and any standard gems inside it. This is how a gem moves to a different unusual courier, at the cost of the first one.
- The regular hammer does not work on unusual couriers. That is why the Master version exists.
If you are unsure what an action does, stop at the confirmation window. Do not use a gem or hammer on an item you cannot afford to lose.

What does a Prismatic gem do?
It changes the colour of the Ethereal effect on the item it sits in. It works only together with an Ethereal gem, on couriers with rare sockets.
What is a Kinetic gem?
A Kinetic Gem adds a new animation to the hero who uses the item, for example Kinetic: Fireborn Assault. It fits an item made for that hero.
Can I move an Ethereal gem to another courier?
Yes, with a Master Artificer’s Hammer, but the courier you take it from is destroyed.
Are Prismatic gems tradable?
Yes. Liquipedia lists Prismatic gems as tradable and marketable, so they sell on the Steam Market. Each colour has its own name, such as Prismatic: Placid Blue, so search the exact one.
How many sockets can an item have?
Valve’s 2013 notes say up to five, one gem per socket. The Dota 2 wiki lists up to nine on most items today. Open the item in the Armory to see its own limit.
Do gems give any gameplay advantage?
No. Gems change cosmetics and counters only.
