Every Dota 2 Arcana: A Release Timeline

How the Arcana tier grew from a single experiment into Dota's flagship cosmetic — and where each one came from.

The Arcana is Dota 2's flagship cosmetic — a total overhaul of a hero. But Arcanas did not arrive all at once, and how each one was released explains a lot about what it costs today. This is the story of the tier, from its first experiment to the modern store model.

The hub explains the tier; the data pages show every Arcana-tier item and its current price.

The first Arcana

The tier began as an experiment: a single hero received a full visual rework — new model, animations, effects and sounds — far beyond any set. It proved players would pay a premium for a transformation rather than just equipment, and the Arcana was born as Dota's top tier.

The community-vote era

For several years, new Arcanas were chosen by community vote, often tied to The International Battle Pass. Players voted on which hero got the next Arcana, and it unlocked through the pass. Because these were event-bound, some early Arcanas became scarce once the pass ended — which is why a few retired ones now sit among the priciest tradable items on the records page.

Battle Pass and bundled Arcanas

Many Arcanas shipped inside Battle Passes as reward-line unlocks, sometimes with upgraded styles earned by leveling. These tie an Arcana to a specific season, so their tradability and price depend on whether that version ever returned. The mechanics of these unlocks are covered in Arcana vs Persona vs Set.

The modern store model

Today most Arcanas are sold directly from the in-game store at a fixed price and bound to your account — they never touch the market, so their price never moves. The Arcanas you see trading are the limited, event and Battle-Pass versions from earlier eras. That split is why Arcana prices range from around $12 to $260, explained in full in are Arcanas worth it.

Understanding the timeline is really understanding the prices: an Arcana's release method — vote, pass or store — tells you whether it's a fixed $35 unlock or a scarce collector's piece. Browse them all on the Arcana hub.
